Beyond the Canvas

Art has been my language for as long as I can remember. I began my formal training at age ten at a specialized boarding art lyceum in Kyiv, followed by years of rigorous classical training at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv, and further studies in Denmark and Italy. For years, my world was defined by the exacting precision of classical realism and formal portraiture.

Then, life shifted radically. The full-scale war in Ukraine, relocating across the world to California, and confronting a cancer diagnosis stripped away the desire for quiet precision. Facing that vulnerability transformed my relationship with the canvas. I no longer wanted to paint polished likenesses—I needed to paint raw, vital life.

I took massive canvases out into the open elements. Standing before the raw power of the landscape, working in the wind and salt air, painting became an act of resilience and visceral presence.

My work lives on the edge between representation and abstraction. I don’t aim to reproduce a photographic scene; I want to translate how it felt to stand there. I treat paint sculpturally—applying thick, tactile marks that hold the energy of the moment. Each piece is an invitation to bring that raw vitality, resilience, and unvarnished beauty into your living space.
